This is the john mayer that just blew my top. His blues roots and i would say “originality” is what shined through this JOHN MAYER ERA. Sure his music now is kept just as original but THIS is about as true to john mayer as george washington is to the dollar bill. I loved his music more then than i do now…even though his music is still good. Oh well…everything evolves.
Damnit, John. You’re so talented, but what the fuck were you thinking with the double popped collar shirts?
@moe761 as much as like (some tracks on) the new album, I have to say this comment is somewhat right.
john should go back to this style rather than how he plays in his gay new cd
I would not go as far to say that everything has already been done. check out sonny landreth. I have personally never heard any player with his sound and style. and his riff vocabulary is so diverse and unique that if he is stealing from someone, i cant tell who. True, most players let their influences show in their playing because of the imprint their music has left in them and to hear that stuff repeated so often may make it seem as if everything has been done, but there is new stuff out there
I agree that he’s not the best guitarist of all time, but lets get this straight. He is a combination of multiple styles, and he gets his primary influence from SRV because he started playing electric at age 13 after recieving an SRV track. So yes he is influenced, but he pops into that BB King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, and then his own style. Don’t believe it, then explain why they call him Slowhand Jr. And an example of Jazz is his coalition with Herbie Hancock on “Stitched Up”.
Yes actually i am a guitar player so my points arent invalid. And he doesnt rip from stevie ray vaughan he’s inspired by him so they sound slightly simliar. And his technique is flawless and he has soo much energy when he’s on stage.Also whats most impressive is that whilst playing he seems to be doing so effortlessly
And by “Elistist” I mean feel strongly about the way people play guitars – every guitar player has these convictions.
Right – a guitar player! Now I can talk freely with someone who will understand what I’m saying. True – you can reuse riffs but then again, there’s a thin line between clearly being influenced and clearly reusing and imitating someone’s riffs. Eg. – JM and Brad Paisley during “Come Back to Bed” – sorry but that was just SRV ripping and that doesn’t make him great but it just reduces his credibility as a guitar player in my opinion. As guitar players, we all know that we can get elitist at times.
its also pretty common knowledge that almost anything that can be done on a guitar has ALREADY been done, so just because he reuses riffs form other famous guitarists doesnt make him any less great. and there is no one even in his league as far as acoustic song writing. Electric guitar is never anything new no matter the guitarist if u have a big enough musical riff “vocabulary”, its more about how they play the riffs and connect them with some of they”re own ideas. and yes i am a guitar player.
Oh – link me if you can where he displays his “Jazz” techniques. I can’t seem to find anything hugely jazz-like unless you count “Neon” which I would consider Jazz but not impressive. However, again, it’s acoustic and I really don’t mind his acoustic stuff because it’s quite creative. I can’t say the same for his electric stuff. Sorry, I really can’t.
Please don’t be offended by my wordss though – I am a JM fan as much as you.
lol. Are you even a guitar player? His blues ability is so average when most of the time he rips of SRV and generally most fans seem to agree. I’m not taking anything away from him because he’s still a good player, albeit be it uncreative.
In terms of his jazz technique – so very far and few that you can’t even call it jazz. Unless you’re a guitar player yourself your opinion is invalid. Sorry – harsh but it’s true. You can’t talk about guitar technique if you’re not a guitarist yourself.
That is BULLCRAP!!! his blues stuff is packed full of technique in terms of guitar playing and he incorparates other styles such a jazz too. He may not be the best player but he’s definately up there.
John Mayer – decent guitarist but by no means the best. His pop stuff on acoustic is way above average in terms of both ability and listenability. His blues stuff (if you can call it that) is uncreative and unoriginal but still pretty good to listen to. I, for one wished that he’d stopped with the blues and carry on with his acoustic pop. I’m sorry but JM you’re not doing great by lashing out at fans for being something you’re not – reference to his Trio Album.
Lol? That’s the most bullshit I’ve read today. Why does anyone have to play one style of anything all the time? Frankly playing one style all the time gets boring as hell, including blues. He should be able to play anything he wants to.
Plus, Daughters got him millions of dollars, and Who Says probably will too.
I miss the old John Mayer
True that
@weightlifter27(funny name…) daughters is a good song…
No its not, person with a funny name.
go for the Trio stuff
His new album IS a let down.
haha love it
1:55 gotta love that face
yea the double POPPED collar that is light blue and pink isnt queer at all…but you gotta love that sweet FAT reverb blues jam in the beginning
well maybe you just think it looks good lol but i guess you could say so…but maybe you only have confidence from looking ‘cool’ ha ha i dunno
@weightlifter27(funny name…) daughters is a good song…
i dunno…
i’ve heard some of the new album(i really don’t wanna listen…. just seeing the album cover is discouraging…) and yea…. it’s a very pop oriented album…
@weightlifter27 i feel that way too. At everything he does i’m hoping for something like in this video but surprisingly he “fell back” in pop music. I have to admit that I like his new tunes but it just hasn’t that power…
